In the closing keynote, Jet-Stream founder Stef van der Ziel introduces ‘disruptive transcoding’ and MaelStrom – a hybrid transcoding technology that runs in the cloud and on premises, combining modern cloud/Kubernetes architecture with NETINT ASIC hardware acceleration. He explains why transcoding is mission-critical for quality of experience and a major cost driver (compute, bandwidth, storage, and human operation), and shares real-world figures: 80 HD channels at 308 watts vs ~2,800+ watts for software (about 89% energy savings), scaling from ~200 to 2,400 channels per rack, and per-channel cloud cost dropping from ~EUR 2,400/month on AWS to ~EUR 750 in Jet-Stream’s cloud (or ~EUR 375 on premises) – up to ~EUR 8-10 million saved over five years for 80 channels. He demos MaelStrom’s interfaces across three levels: ‘easy’ (the one-click OnAir 4K browser streaming app), ‘smart’ (self-serve live-stream setup, custom transcoding profiles, deinterlacing, multi-audio, scene optimization, and AI speech-to-text subtitles), and ‘expert’ (a turnkey box with transcoder, origin, CDN, and portal that stacks into a MicroCloud) – all running on green, GDPR-compliant European infrastructure.
